I am just wondering why the civilian lives in Gaza did not flee?
The Palestinian authority do not allow or they do not want to?
There is nothing complicated.Israel attacks Gaza Arabs in retaliation for three yeas long rocket attaks they carried out on Israeli cities.Israel tried to use the diplomatic methods to make them stop the attacks,and when these methods failed-Israel stuck back.
All is simple.
The line that the Israeli government is giving to the world, and to its own electorate, is that they are simply responding in self-defense to the rocket attacks by Hamas members in Gaza. Of course, anyone with a brain should realise that the situation in the middle east is NEVER that simple.
Israel still illegally occupies the largest part of Palestinian territory, the West Bank, and allows Jews to build settlements there. In the mean time, they have built a wall, allegedly to keep out suicide bombers, but which in reality is simply a device to keep the ordinary Palestinians in their place.
Hamas has a lot to answer for as well. There are extremists on both sides.
Israel does not approve of Hamas, who are currently in elected political control of Gaza, believing that they are being controlled by Iran and Syria. Since Hamas gained control in 2006, Israel has made various attempts to remove them from power. The latest attempt was an economic strike, closing the borders of Gaza and preventing any trade from entering or exiting. This crippled Gaza’s economy, and they retaliated with missile strikes. When the cease-fire expired on December 18th, Israel let loose their much more advanced and destructive offensive arsenal, refusing Gaza’s offers to renew the cease-fire under the conditions that their borders be opened.
Both countries are at fault. However, I tend to sympathize more with Gaza’s economic desperation than Israel’s political pride. Many institutions have already called Israel’s actions crimes of war, and I have to agree.
Israel attacked the Palestinians because they knew they’d be able to get away with it – having the support and $$ of the USA cheering them on, and a guaranteed block of any UN resolution to prevent the massacre is a pretty good incentive. All they had to do is brand Hamas as “terrorists” and they got a free pass by the ‘States.
Why didn’t the civilians flee? You might as well ask why the Jews who were detained in the Warsaw Ghetto didn’t flee. Fences and blockades and lots of guns.
It is true that most Palestinians are unable to escape. I saw a news story that indicates that even Egypt (another Muslim country) is not opening the border.
Everyone keeps speaking of this as Israel “attacking” Gaza. I think that does a disservice to the actual state of events. Israel did not just “attack” out of the blue. They are responding to attacks on innocent citizens. The Palestinians purposefully use civilians as shields. They don’t mind having them killed because they can then use them again to turn world opinion against Israel. Look at Yahoo! Answers and see how well it is working. Most people seem to believe that Israel is randomly attacking and killing innocent Palestinians just because they feel like it.

- Some would like to, but are unable to because they do not have the means. Many people there are very poor, not everyone there has a car. Imagine fleeing on foot with a family to feed… it’s just not a possibility. This is why they flee to local “safe havens”. Which is why it’s a shame that Hamas occasionally tries to launch military operations from such locations.
The Israeli Army is not allowing them to flee. They are systematically killing civilians now, including women and children. Today they found little kids laying “barely alive” and in a very bad shape, near their dead mother. They were denied food or water by the Israeli Army for 2 days.
